The South County Airport Pilots Association (SCAPA) is a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation organized as a sub-chapter of the California Pilots Association (CalPilots). SCAPA’s mission is to:

  • Preserve San Martin Airport
  • Improve airport’s value to the community
  • Participate in any planned airport growth
  • Enhance flying safety
  • Promote fellowship among pilots and aviation enthusiasts
  • Encourage and assist people’s pursuit of aviation.

Our History

The pilots and users of South County Airport formed this Association in December 2000, to ensure that the airport remains open and available for use by general aviation aircraft. An exploratory gathering was held in November 2000. During the second meeting of interested parties, held on December 5, 2000, steps were taken to set up the non-profit corporation that will function as a chapter of the California Pilots Association. At the same meeting, a board of directors was elected. Several committees to further the mission of the Association were also established. Since that time, SCAPA has maintained it status as a non-profit 501(c)3 organization and also as a sub-chapter of the California Pilots Association

It’s never been more important to be a member of SCAPA. We have numerous events and activities centered around aviation and the San Martin Airport that are fun and rewarding. At the same time, we are faced with challenges with maintenance andmanagement of our airport from our landlord. We don’t want SCAPA to be a political organization, but our group has common interests, and we should each have a voice and a way to stay informed about factors that affect our aviation interests, specifically our airport.

We have fund raising activities to fund the scholarships that we provide to local youth to help them on their way to careers in aviation. The biggest activity we have is the Food Truck Fly In, which will be held on October 26, 2024. This is not just a fundraiser, but more of a community appreciation day involving families, flight schools, flight demonstrations, aircraft on display, live music, vendor booths, and of course a great selection of food from the area’s premier food trucks. One of the highlights at this event is the scholarship awards, which is a truly heartwarming moment.

Many of our pilots have flown in the EAA-sponsored Young Eagle events at our airport where youth aged 8 to 17 are given their first flights in planes at no charge via volunteer EAA pilots. The most recent flights were held on July 20 th where 75 kids were flown. Please consider becoming a Young Eagle pilot.

Membership meetings have been held every quarter, with the latest being a summer
BBQ at Pat Belanger’s hangar on June 8, 2024. The next member meeting is tentatively scheduled for September 7, at noon. Details will be announced via email.
